Hanson PH Ltd boxing clever in Huddersfield

TWO Huddersfield firms have embarked on a new venture.

Hanson Family Holdings, based at Ashgrove Road, off Leeds Road at Deighton, and Edgerton-based pH Europe have launched Hanson PH Ltd, a new packaging sales company.

The move comes hot on the heels of Hanson’s recent expansion into China and is the first of a number of new projects the two companies are planning together.

Peter Wade, commercial director for Hanson PH Ltd, said the new venture capitalised on the core capabilities of the existing companies and would secure and create new jobs in Huddersfield.

The new company is based at the Hanson Logistics site off Leeds Road with sales activities centred on the pH Europe offices in Edgerton.

It will stock and distribute long-life plastic boxes, crates, and pallets under an exclusive deal with Dutch-based Schoeller Arca Systems, the world’s largest manufacturer of re-usable plastic transit packaging.

Mr Wade said: “Hanson PH anticipates strong growth in the sector over the coming years as the UK emerges from recession and more companies adopt re-usable packaging to reduce waste and deliver goods cost-effectively.”

Hanson Family Holdings is the umbrella under which the Hanson family interests and companies are monitored.

The business originated during the mid-1800s when Mary Hanson carried wool by packhorse between Longwood and Huddersfield.

The business grew from a small haulage firm into an international concern with interests in petrol stations, car and coach hire, a school of motoring, a property company and a travel company.

Lord Hanson, who was chairman of the company prior to his son, Robert Hanson, set up Hanson plc with Lord White.

Both transformed Hanson plc into a global multi-billion pound conglomerate before it de-merged in the late 1990s.

Jack Cleghorn and Peter Wade set up pH Europe in 1996 in Huddersfield.

The company operates a fleet of industrial stainless steel containers throughout Europe – typically one-tonne capacity packs used to transport large volumes of liquid products on an industrial scale.

Products as diverse as food and beverage, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics are all carried in the containers at various stages during manufacture and distribution.

Hanson buys into Chinese Chemical Firm

Hanson Family Holdings, the UK holding company of the sons of the late Lord Hanson, announces its first major investment into China's industrial sector through the purchase of a significant minority interest in Sinojie (HK) Limited, a fine chemical trading and procurement business with offices in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Hanson will acquire an initial 20% interest in Sinojie together with options to take its stake up to a controlling position within 3 years for an undisclosed considoration. The business will be renamed Sinojie Hanson Limited.

Ray Overton, Director of Sinojie Hanson Limited said, "We are very excited by the outlook for Sinojie Hanson. Its business model is built on identifying, negotiating and contracting with the industry's most competitive producers in an increasingly globalized single market.

Cost pressures will drive the developed world's leading pharmaceutical and chemical groups to search out alternative suppliers, and Sinojie Hanson will be there to help."

The Hon. Robert Hanson, Chairman of Hanson Family Holdings said, "Significant synergies are expected between Hanson's existing businesses and Sinojie Hanson's operations, which occupy strongly complementary positions in the industrial chemicals supply chain.

This acquisition marks a first step in Hanson Family Holdings's intention to grow its emerging market operations around the core logistics business and it expects to make similar moves over the coming months.

Background to Sinojie Hanson:

Sinojie was founded in 2005 by three principals: Ray Overton, a former technical and commercial executive with Zeneca and Avecia, who relocated to Shanghai to set up the business; Abbin Huang who has worked in the fine chemical market in China for many years; and Allan Hughes who has 30 years experience in both the fine chemicals and pharmaceutical industries.

Sinojie Hanson's principal business is sourcing specialist industrial chemicals from manufacturers in China for end-user companies in the UK and continental Europe. Its customer base includes major multinational pharmaceutical, agrichemical and biomedical companies.

Background to Hanson Family Holdings:
